Frequently Asked Questions, Answered

What is insurance discovery?

Insurance discovery is the process of finding active, billable insurance coverage for a patient listed as self-pay. Instead of starting from an insurance card the patient didn’t bring, it starts from basic demographics — name, date of birth, SSN — and searches payers for coverage on file. The point is to catch the coverage that was never captured at registration, before the balance turns into bad debt or charity care.

How is insurance discovery different from an eligibility check?

An eligibility check answers “is this specific plan active for this patient?” You already have to know the payer and the member ID. Insurance discovery answers the earlier question: “does this patient have any coverage at all, and with whom?” You run discovery when there’s no card on file, then get the eligibility-grade benefit detail back automatically for whatever it finds.

What information do you need to run a search?

Name, date of birth, and SSN. No member ID, no payer name, no insurance card. That’s the whole point — if you had those, you’d run a normal eligibility check instead.

How much does insurance discovery cost?

$1.50 per check. Usage-based, no lock-in contract, no per-seat fees. You pay for the searches you run and nothing else.

What does the confidence score mean?

Every match comes back labeled either High or Review Needed. High means the identifiers line up cleanly enough to bill against. Review Needed means something is close but not conclusive, usually a partial demographic match, and a person should look before you act on it. Discovery tools that hand back a flat list of “possible” matches push that judgment onto your staff without telling them where the doubt is.

What do I get back when coverage is found?

Every coverage on file, active and inactive, with subscriber and plan identifiers. For anything active, you get the full benefit detail straight from the payer’s X12 271 response — the same data a real-time eligibility check returns, including copay, coinsurance, deductible, and plan type. No second lookup needed.

How does Veritable compare with Experian Coverage Discovery, Waystar, Inovalon, and FinThrive?

Those are enterprise platforms where discovery is one module inside a much larger contract, usually priced per engagement and scoped through a sales cycle. Veritable is published at $1.50 a check with no minimum and no lock-in, which suits billing companies and practices that want the capability without buying the platform around it. Happy to run a side-by-side on your actual volumes.

Is patient data secure?

314e is SOC 2 Type 2 audited and an NCQA-certified data aggregator partner. Discovery searches run over the same HIPAA-standard transactions as eligibility checks, and every search is logged in an audit trail you can pull at any time.
