What is Stark Law?


The self-referrals of Physicians for Medicare and Medicaid, are governed under this law. The Congress passed the original self-referral statute, sponsored by then Rep. Pete Stark (D-Calif.), in 1989. The updated version passed in 2007 adds an exception which permits to subsidize physician purchases of EHR software up to 85 percent of the purchase price, and the training costs.
