What is National Provider Identifier (NPI)?

Health care providers in the U.S. are provided with National Provider Identifier, which is a 10-digit unique ID. It is required by physicians to place orders and for e-prescribing. NPI is a replacement for Unique Physician Identification Number (UPIN).
