What is Downcoding?

Downcoding is a phenomenon in which health insurance providers systematically downgrade diagnosis codes in order to understate the cost of patient care, and it is mainly done when the submitted claim is not accompanied by required documents. This can have serious implications for patients as well as for the overall healthcare system since hospitals are essentially reimbursed based on the dollar amount that their treatments and procedures are assigned to.
